Martins own description of this painting:

A picturesque village looking at the open sea. Expectation of treasure in the form of variety of fish.

Childlike enthusiasm slowly dwindling as the harsh reality of corporate butchery sinks in. Fish boxes piled high, supermarket shelves convince the public of a healthy sea. Overhead comments of fish only for show drawing anger from a more knowing and turned in fanatic.

The primeval soup no longer holds the bounty of pleasure only total disappointment and fury, who owns the life in the sea anyway. Old men see it all, sit on benches sometimes feeling guilty but reassured that they clothed their children.

The people who actually care have no say in the matter whatsoever. As long as the market is filled by the corporates no possible harm can fall. Non quantifiable and out of sight these activities trust more and more.
